  What are Dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers can be made of different substances and come in various consistencies. They are injected into the skin, deeper tissue or lips to replace volume, fill out wrinkles or folds, smooth out and improve the texture of the skin. Dermal fillers are commonly used to fill lines and folds in conjunction with muscle relaxing anti-wrinkle injections. They are also used to fill static lines i.e. lines which are there when the person is not animating. The result is younger, natural looking, revitalised skin. We can also use dermal fillers creatively to enhance the person's facial features.
At Le Temple, we use the latest generation of temporary fillers which gives you the longest lasting and most natural results. We predominantly work with hyaluronic acid which is a natural sugar present in normal skin.

How do dermal fillers work?
Dermal fillers work by filling up a potential space. When in situ, the filler that we use also works by attracting moisture to the injected area and stimulate collagen production. The "plumping" action of this filler stretches the fibroblasts which are the cells in the skin that produce collagen and induces them to produce more natural collagen. In other words, the filler not only fills the space but in the long run improves the natural texture of your skin and prevent it from sagging further. The dermal filler may also interfere with the breakdown of existing collagen.

Where can dermal fillers be used?
Dermal fillers are commonly used to fill most wrinkles and folds such as:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines
- Nasolabial folds (folds between the nose and the angle of the mouth)
- Vertical lip lines
- Marionette lines (lines between the angle of the mouth and the jaw)

They are also used for facial feature enhancements such as:
- Eyebrow lifting
- Nose reshaping
- Cheek enhancements
- Lip reshaping / enhancement
- Creation of a fultrum (groove between nose and upper lip)
- Getting rid of jowls
- Reshaping the jawline
- Chin enhancement
- Revolumising of the ear lobes

We all lose volume as we age and usually just by creatively using dermal fillers and replacing the volume lost in various places in the face, years can be regained in recreating a more youthful look. This is not necessarily to enhance but simply to replace what we have lost with age. This is particularly obvious when we replace volume in lips, cheeks and filling out the hollow under the eye commonly known as the tear troughs.

Are dermal filler injections painful?
These injections usually cause mild discomfort when done by a good injector with appropriate anaesthetic. At Le Temple we would normally pre-treat the injection areas with a very potent topical anaesthetic. We also perform a dental block for the injection of nasolabial folds and lips. Our clients commonly claim that it hurt much less than when the block is performed at their dentist's office. Once the local anesthetic is working which should only take a matter of minutes, there should be minimal discomfort with the administration of the dermal filler.

What is the down time?
Immediately after the injections, there will be some redness and swelling of the injected areas. This tends to be mild and would not stop most clients from carrying on with his / her normal activities later in the day. Any small amount of redness is easily camouflaged with a concealer. Most product related swelling will subside within a few days.

Are dermal fillers safe and what are the potential side effects?
Because the dermal fillers used at Le Temple are naturally occurring complex sugars, they are very safe. Besides mild redness and swelling at the injection site which normally subsides within a few days, like all injections bruising may sometimes occur. Infection is a theoretical possibility but rarely occurs.

How long does the procedure take?
The topical anaesthetic takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes to work and dental blocks can usually be done within 5 minutes. The dermal filler injections take about 10 to 20 minutes to perform depending on the areas treated.

When would I see the effects of the treatment?
The effect of treatment is instantaneous. Swelling post treatment tends to temporarily enhance the effect of the dermal filler and within a few days this will subside revealing the actual real improvement associated with the treatment. If the desired effect is more like what is seen immediately post treatment, more dermal may be used later. It is important to drink plenty of fluids as the dermal filler attracts fluid to the area treated. Try to avoid caffeine and alcohol a few days after treatment.

How long does the treatment last?
Depending on the choice of filler, its consistency and the injection site, dermal fillers last from 6 to 18 months. We do not recommend the use of permanent fillers except in exceptional circumstances because of the risk of nodule formation which may require removal by surgical excision. Using permanent fillers may also interact with other fillers in the future yielding unpredictable results and risks.

How much does it cost?
The cost of treatment depends on the choice of fillers, the areas needing correction or enhancements and of course the amount of product used. Dermal fillers come in half or full syringes and prices start from $350 for the former and $600 for the latter.

What can I do to prepare myself for these treatments?
To prevent bruising, it is best to stay away from anti-inflammatories e.g. Aspirin, Nurofen or Voltaren a few days prior to the procedure. Alcohol is also not a good idea on the day and should be kept to a minimum the day before. A good sleep the night before and minimising stress helps with the perception of pain. Remaining calm and relaxed means the procedure will be done usually with relative comfort. Arnica (a natural remedy available over the counter) may be applied to the treated area to prevent bruising.
